The Deputy Head (Academic)
will be a key member of the School Leadership Team and will take
responsibility for the academic development of all our pupils.
Responsibilities may evolve
over time, in response to the natural growth and development of the
school.
The specific duties of the
successful candidate will vary according to their particular strengths and
experiences, but are likely to include the following:
Take responsibility for the
quality of teaching and learning.
Take responsibility for the
quality and relevance of the curriculum.
Work with the IB Coordinator
to maintain and raise academic standards through effective tracking and
intervention as appropriate.
Along with the Head of
Secondary, undertake regular work scrutinies along with both formal and
informal lesson observations in line with school procedure.
Lead Secondary quality
assurance mechanisms.
Review, with Head of
Secondary, departmental and school examination results and subject
development plans.
Chair the Curriculum Leader
meeting and any other relevant meeting or committee designed to improve
the quality of the curriculum and/or teaching and learning.
Ensure that teaching staff are
aware of new developments in teaching and learning; pedagogical approaches
and strategies.
Promote and advocate the use
of IT to enhance teaching and learning across the curriculum.
Formulate and review the
academic/curriculum sections of the annual School Development Plan.
Be responsible, in conjunction
with the Examinations Officer and IB Coordinator, for public examination
results summaries and performance analysis at school and departmental
level.
Ensure that department
handbooks, and Unit plans are reviewed regularly and updated as
appropriate.
With the IB Coordinator
oversee, monitor and review the school’s assessment, recording and
reporting procedures.
Produce the academic timetable
by the end of the first half of the Second semester, and involves
consultation with the appropriate parties.
Sustain, where appropriate,
the clear focus on the importance of formative assessment practices that
has already been established at our School and seek to deepen how current
practices operate, with the ultimate aim of raising pupils’ attainment.
Maintain close scrutiny of
pupils’ academic reports ensuring they are accurate and meaningful and are
always written in order to assist with the development of pupils’
progress.
Communicate with new staff,
ahead of their arrival, on all academic aspects of their new role.
Assist with the organization
and planning of the induction period, with specific reference to academic
matters.
Maintain responsibility for
academic aspects of the day-to-day running of the school. Work with the
Head of Secondary to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the Secondary
School.
Organize, attend, and support
all parents’ consultations and other academic events.
Any other reasonable tasks
required by The Head of Secondary and associated with the role of Deputy
Head
